Customers are mixed about the water saving of the cistern. Some mention that the tank fills fast, it never overflows and is a great water saver. However, others say that the diverter does not divert all of the water, and the water is spurting out at the join in the downspout where the cap is.

Customers have mixed opinions about the fit of the cistern. Some mention that the tubing fits well, while others say that it's not a perfect fit for their 3x4 downspout. The design is great, but it won't fit a larger downsout. Some say the product is too big and doesn't match the plumbing. Some also mention that it needs tighter fitting hoses, and the end does not fit Algreen rain barrels without hose or is rather bulky for what it is.
"...Also, the end does not fit Algreen rain barrels (or the generic Menards brands) without hose or barrel modifications...." Read more

Our barrels have screened over tops, so we could not use the mounting option of placing the diverter higher than the tops of the barrels. The instructions don't make this too clear, but the location of the top edge of the downspout outlet inside the diverter chamber will determine the final water level in barrels with open tops. If you look inside the diverter, it is just a bit lower than the bottom edge of the door opening; the top edge of the part that the lower downspout fits into. Determine how high you want the barrel to fill, and mount the diverter in the downspout so that the top edge of the downspout outlet is at that level. When the barrel fills up, water will back up in the diverter until it spills over into the downspout outlet.
This diverter works on the principle that water in a vertical drainpipe doesn't fall down the middle, but clings to the sides of the pipe as it falls. (With this in mind, be sure you mount the diverter at least 6" downstream from any bends in the downspout; this gives the water a chance to reestablish itself on the walls of the pipe.) When the falling water drops into the diverter chamber, it sprays around inside the chamber instead of falling straight through, and then is routed to the barrel. If a large volume of water is coming out of the downspout, and it is more than the line to the barrel can handle, the excess simply overflows into the downspout outlet. In a light rain, almost all of the water will go to the barrel.
So far, it seems to work very well. The gutter we have it installed in drains about 1/3 of the roof of our not very large house, and a 0.4" rainfall will completely fill both 55 gallon barrels! I'm giving it four stars only because I haven't seen how well it stands up to a Midwest winter yet. Seeing it was designed for the Madison, Wisconsin area, I think it will most likely do just fine.
Update 3/14/2011
The diverter passed through a rough winter just fine. I had the cap installed on the line to the rain barrels, so the water trapped in the diverter did freeze. It did no damage to the diverter and it did not ever plug the downspout area of the diverter with ice. I'm raising the review to five stars; I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this device to anyone. Great product!
Update 1/17/2013
Looking over the current instruction sheet for installation, they have done a good job of clarifying the installation for open or screened top barrels. Kudos; that was much needed.
Update 5/3 13
Now starting the third season with the diverter. It wintered just fine through another subfreezing Illinois winter; no cracks or leaks and we don't do anything special about winterizing it.(Basically, it's just left there...)The ONLY "problem" encountered so far is dirt from the gutter can accumulate in the line to the rain barrel and slow or stop rain flow into the barel. Just flush it with the garden hose. :-)
Update 2/14/2018
This thing is the energizer bunny of rain diverters, it just keeps going. Still in use. still working fine, still not doing anything special to winterize it. :-)
Update 4/15/2019
Well, it looks like the bitter cold weather in January finally took it's toll, the diverter has two cracks from ice. Looks like I can repair it with either epoxy or a Bondic pen, if not, it will be replaced with another one.
Pros:
- Ease of install - Direct, to the point directions. Cut your gutter, screw in top, replace bottom, done. In total I had this installed in about 10 minutes.
- Functionality - I'm only using one side of the diverter. After the first moderate rainfall we had, it filled my 65 gallon barrel to the top. I wasn't expecting that kind of efficiency.
Cons:
The only issue I could find is that the basic kit is much too basic. The diverter itself works perfectly, but there is only one hose included. One hose is fine to fill the barrel, but if you also need an overflow you're headed back to the hardware store. Not a big deal though and there is a complete version that offers 2 hoses (but is expensive and includes unneccessary fittings in some cases). Also, the end does not fit Algreen rain barrels (or the generic Menards brands) without hose or barrel modifications. Rainreserve does sell a separate hose kit that comes with one hose, but two custom barrel fittings that are usable on the Algreen and Menards brands. It's almost like RainReserve planned this and is their way of getting you to pony up an additional fifteen bucks for an additional 6 foot overflow hose and the extra fitting.
If I could give 4 1/2 stars I would. I'm docking it a star for the simple fact that the basic should come with at least one barrel adapter. You shouldnt have to cut a new hose and rig it up in order to get it to work properly.
1. The dual-port design allows you to attach up to two barrels to the same diverter without having to switch locations.
2. Multiple options in installation allows connections to many different types of barrels and systems.
3. Debris-reducing design allows most of the debris to flow through the downspout, while the water gets collected in the barrel.
4. Can be used with barrels that are pre-drilled for a overflow spout, or adjusted so that the water runs down the downspout when the barrel is full.
5. Simple, one-time installation that is more aesthetically pleasing than many of the other systems.
6. Can be winterized and cleaned easily.
7. Accurate and simple instructions.
I ordered the "bare bones" system to save money on the unneeded extra pieces (since I have my own drill bits and have a simple setup).
